A successful American author, Jim Collins have proposed five levels of leadership that could be a guidance for developing the leadership skills. This article will further discuss these five levels of leadership described as follows.

Level 1 — Highly Capable Individuals

The first level of leadership according to Collins is all about having good individual skills. Level 1 leaders make productive contributions through talent, knowledge, skills, and good working habits.

Level 2 — Contributing Team Member

Collins’s framework suggests that level 2 leaders have great team skills. They contribute individual capabilities to the achievement of group objectives and work effectively with others in a group setting.

Level 3 — Competent Manager

Level 3 leaders on the other hand have excellent management skills. They organize people and resources toward the effective and efficient pursuit of predetermined goals.

Level 4 — Effective Leader

According to Collins, level 4 leaders are effective leaders. These leaders catalyze commitment to and pursuit of a clear and compelling vision. They are also great at stimulating higher performance standards.

Level 5 — Executive

Collins highlights that level 5 leaders are the highest-level leaders, build enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. These leaders can be the key to creating a great organization.

To sum up, in this disruptive era, leadership shall be possessed by people, especially for managers or leader in workplace in which leadership is refers to how they lead the employee and organization. By knowing the five levels of Leadership proposed by Jim Collins, leaders can have a better understanding about maximizing their leadership skills and be a better leader for organization.
