3 Key Aspects of Leadership by Ki Hajar Dewantara

Leadership refers to the activity to influence others using example, motivation, and guidance so they can work in a team to achieve the collective goals. Besides, leadership also deals with the ability to supervise, coordinate, communicate, and interact with employers on specific context.

The Introduction of Leadership Trilogy

There are three key aspects of leadership which commonly called as Leadership Trilogy proposed by Ki Hajar Dewantara, the father of Indonesian education. Besides being applied to teachers in the world of education, these aspects could also apply to leaders or managers in any organization or company. The leadership trilogy described as follows:

1. Ing ngarso sung tulodo

Ingngarso sung tulodo, this aspect means “being a role model leader”. A leader should be able to act as a model for his subordinates. It is also related to how a leader behaves and builds a good communication to motivate his/her subordinates.

2. Ing madyo mangun karso

Ing madyo mangun karso, this aspect means “being a motivational leader”. A leader should be able to motivate his/her subordinates so that they will adore the leader and get motivated by the leader’s presence.

3. Tut Wuri Handayani

Tut Wuri Handayani, this aspect means “being a supportive leader” is interpreted as empowering subordinates by following their development process with careful observations and feedback, nurturing and guide them to comprehend the better meaning of the world.

Conclusion

Leadership has key aspects that should be attained to a leader broken down into Ing ngarso sung tulodo (be a role model), Ing madyo mangun karso (be a motivator), and Tut Wuri Handayani (be supportive). By knowing all those aspects proposed by Ki Hajar Dewantara, leaders can understand how to build a good leadership for their team or organization which can lead to the growth and advancement of team’s or organization’s growth in the future.
